Invasive mucinous carcinoma of the breast is mostly associated with invasive carcinoma of no special type (NST) and sometimes\nwith neuroendocrine type tumors such as solid papillary carcinoma. Extracellularmucin production in invasive lobular carcinoma\n(ILC) is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge only 18 such cases have been described in the literature. Here we present a\nunique case of invasive pleomorphic-type lobular carcinoma (IPTLC) presenting as a mucinous carcinoma of the breast on core\nneedle biopsy. Here we discuss the impact andways to suspect such case....
Mixed acinar-endocrine carcinoma (MAEC) of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm, consisting of at least 25%â??30% of acinar and\nneuroendocrine populations. Patients are often middle-aged and present with nonspecific symptoms. Imaging typically reveals a\nsolid lesion in the pancreatic head. Management involves surgical resection and the overall prognosis is variable. Here, we present\na case of a 48-year-old male who presented with a MAEC arising from duodenal pancreatic heterotopia. This is the one of the first\ncases, with histologic evidence, of MAEC arising from pancreatic heterotopia....
The aim of this study was to track dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) labeled with dextran-coated\nsuperparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).\nDental pulp was isolated from male Sprague Dawley rats and cultured in Dulbeccoâ??s modified Eagleâ??s\nmedium F12 (DMEM-F12) and 10% fetal bovine serum. Effects of SPIONs on morphology, viability,\napoptosis, stemness, and osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of DPSCs were assessed. Prussian\nblue staining and MRI were conducted to determine in vitro efficiency of SPIONs uptake by the cells.\nBoth non-labeled and labeled DPSCs were adherent to culture plates and showed spindle-shape\nmorphologies, respectively. They were positive for osteogenic and adipogenic induction and\nexpression of cluster of differentiation (CD) 73 and CD90 biomarkers, but negative for expression\nof CD34 and CD45 biomarkers. The SPIONs were non-toxic and did not induce apoptosis in\ndoses less than 25 mg/mL. Internalization of the SPIONs within the DPSCs was confirmed by\nPrussian blue staining and MRI. Our findings revealed that the MRI-based method could successfully\nmonitor DPSCs labeled with dextran-coated SPIONs without any significant effect on osteogenic\nand adipogenic differentiation, viability, and stemness of DPSCs. We provided the in vitro evidence\nsupporting the feasibility of an MRI-based method to monitor DPSCs labeled with SPIONs without\nany significant reduction in viability, proliferation, and differentiation properties of labeled cells,\nshowing that internalization of SPIONs within DPSCs were not toxic at doses less than 25 mg/mL.\nIn general, the SPION labeling does not seem to impair cell survival or differentiation. SPIONs are\nbiocompatible, easily available, and cost effective, opening a new avenue in stem cell labeling in\nregenerative medicine....
According to WHO, the rates of smear-negative and extra-pulmonary pulmonary\ntuberculosis are increasing in high prevalence HIV epidemic areas.\nDelays in diagnosis of tuberculosis can lead to large excess of mortality. It is\nextremely important to provide a strong diagnosis tool of tuberculosis if we\nwant to reduce mortality due particularly to TB co-infection in HIV infected\npeople in low-income countries such as Togo. This study aims to assess the\nperformance of Determineâ?¢ TB LAM Antigen, a rapid diagnostic test (RDT)\nfor tuberculosis. It was an evaluation study, conducted at the National Reference\nLaboratory for Mycobacteria located at the Sylvanus Olympio University\nTeaching Hospital in Lome, Togo from 01 July to 15 November 2017. We\nperformed the assessment onto 100 urine specimens collected from 100 subjects\n(HIV-infected or not). The test allows qualitative detection of the Lipo\nArabinno Mannan (LAM) antigen of Mycobacteria in the urine. Bacilloscopy\nwas chosen as gold standard. Overall, the test Determineâ?¢ TB LAM presented\na sensitivity of 31.25% and a specificity of 95%. In contrast, the sensitivity\nand specificity of the test were respectively 82.35% and 66.67% in the\ngroup of HIV-infected subjects. In HIV non-infected subjects, the sensitivity\nwas 17.46% and the specificity was 100%. Determineâ?¢ TB LAM Antigen test\ncan help detect TB in HIV-infected people unable to expectorate in our settings....
Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum level of cystatin C\n(Cys-C) and AF (atrial fibrillation) and its clinical classification. Method:\nFrom January 2017 to April 2019, 168 cases of Xiaogan Central Hospital were\nchosen as the object of this study. The subjects were divided into 86 patients\nwith AF and 82 patients in the control group. The AF group was divided into\nparoxysmal AF group (29 cases), persistent AF group (27 cases) and permanent\nAF group (29 cases) according to the European atrial fibrillation management\nguidelines and the North America Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology\n(NASPE) arrhythmia group organized the categorization of AF. Results:\nCompared with the control group, the level of the serum Cys-C was\nsignificantly higher in the AF group, the difference was statistically significant\n(P < 0.05). There was significant difference in Cys-C level in patients\nwith different types of AF (P < 0.05). The levels of neutrophil percentage, low\ndensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), left ventricular diameter, left atrial\ndiameter, C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine in the AF group were\nsignificantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The difference\nof neutrophil percentage, LDL-C, left ventricular ejection fraction, left atrial\ndiameter, CRP and homocysteine levels in patients with different types of\natrial fibrillation was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Logistic analysis showed\nthat the serum Cys-C level, CRP, homocysteine, left ventricular diameter, left\natrial diameter could be used as an independent predictor of atrial fibrillation\nwhen other factors were corrected. Conclusion: Serum Cys-C level in atrial\nfibrillation group is significantly higher than the control group, there are differences\nbetween different atrial fibrillation clinical classification, its level increased\nwith duration of atrial fibrillation. Serum Cys-C level and inflammatory\nmarkers CRP, WBC and neutrophilic granulocyte percentage were positively\ncorrelated, indicating that serum cystatin C is associated with chronic\ninflammation, involved in the occurrence of atrial fibrillation, maintain and\nrecurrence. Logistic analysis showed that the serum cystatin C level could be\nused as an independent predictor of atrial fibrillation when other factors were\ncorrected....
